RO System Slow or Dripping: Tank Pressure Fix
You put a pot under the RO faucet to fill it for pasta and walk away. Two minutes later there's an inch of water in the bottom and the stream has thinned to a dribble you can count drops in. The first glass of the morning was fine — thin, but fine. By the third you're standing at the sink waiting. Filters were changed six months ago and nothing leaks.
The two-minute diagnosis: weight, then gauge
First find out whether the tank is full and won't push, or never filled at all. Opposite problems, opposite fixes — identical at the faucet.
Open the RO faucet and leave it open until flow stops completely — 3–5 minutes on a working system, 30 seconds on a dead one. Then lift the tank. A standard 3.2-gallon tank weighs roughly 10–12 lb empty and close to 30 lb full; the difference is unmistakable by hand. Heavy with no flow means water is in there and nothing pushes it out — a pre-charge problem. Light means the system isn't producing or isn't filling — a feed-side problem.

Two rules make or break this test. Measure only on a fully drained tank — with water inside you're reading compressed air, not pre-charge. And add air in 1–2 psi bursts: a bike pump blows past 7 psi in one stroke.
What actually causes weak RO flow, in order of frequency
The tank is the leading suspect, but several other faults produce the same dribble. Cheapest and most likely first:

That last row surprises people every February. NSF/ANSI 58, the standard RO drinking water systems are certified to, rates production at 50 psi and 77°F. At 50°F output drops roughly by half, so a "75 GPD" membrane performs like a 35–40 GPD one and the tank takes twice as long to recover. Nothing is broken — the rating describes test conditions your kitchen doesn't have in winter.
If the tank is light, gauge the feed line next. Household pressure typically runs 40–80 psi and most manufacturers spec 40 as the floor; a $12 hose-bib gauge on a laundry tap tells you where you stand. Below 40 psi the auto shut-off valve misreads too — it halts production at roughly two-thirds of line pressure, so weak feed trips it early and leaves the tank half full.
Why new filters usually don't fix it
The reflex when an RO system slows down is to change every cartridge. The parts are cheap and it feels like progress, but it often changes nothing — prefilters and the membrane control how fast the tank fills, while the tank's air charge controls how fast water leaves. A tank with no pre-charge holds its full 2–3 usable gallons and hands them back as a trickle.
Two other purchases miss for the same reason. A higher-output membrane — 50 GPD swapped for 100 GPD to "speed things up" — doesn't help when the tank is the bottleneck: same weak stream, plus more wastewater, since higher-GPD membranes generally run a looser drain ratio. Work the order instead: gauge the empty tank, gauge the feed line, then replace cartridges on schedule rather than by symptom. If both pressures check out and flow is still poor, a TDS meter settles the membrane question in a minute.

- Measuring pressure without draining the tank. Water inside compresses the air and inflates the reading — 20 psi on a tank whose real pre-charge is 3. Run the faucet dry first.
- Pumping the tank to 20–30 psi "for more pressure." Over-charging steals storage instead of adding flow: the shut-off valve halts production sooner, and a 4-gallon tank ends up holding barely one.
- Replacing the membrane because flow is slow. A membrane fails by letting contaminants through, not by slowing alone. Confirm with a TDS meter — under 85% rejection versus feed water — before spending $40–90.
- Using a car tire gauge. Automotive gauges start near 10 psi and are unreliable below that, exactly where the RO answer lives. A 0–30 psi gauge costs $10–25.
