The postcard from the water utility says your service line is "unknown material." Nothing about the water changed — it runs clear, tastes like it did last week, leaves no ring in the toilet tank. That's the whole problem with lead. Iron announces itself in orange stains, sulfur announces itself through the bathroom door, and lead does neither. The house went up in 1961, the kitchen faucet is original, and none of that shows in a glass.

The core answer: Lead almost never arrives from the source — it dissolves out of your own service line, pre-1986 solder and brass fixtures, so no glass test, TDS meter or taste check will find it. The EPA action level is 15 ppb (0.015 mg/L) against a health goal of zero, and the 2024 Lead and Copper Rule Improvements drop that trigger to 10 ppb from November 2027. A certified lab test on a first-draw sample after 6+ hours of standing water runs $20–100. Two checks that find it — neither one visual

Start with the pipe, because it's free. Find where the water line enters the house — usually near the main shutoff in a basement or crawlspace — and look at the 12 inches on the street side of the meter. Scratch it with a coin, then hold a magnet to it.

Your utility owes you the other half. Under the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, every public water system had to publish a service line inventory by October 16, 2024, listing each address as lead, galvanized requiring replacement, non-lead or unknown. Look it up on the utility website or call. "Unknown" is common and means untested, not safe.

Then test the water, because the pipe check can't cover solder and brass. The EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) and your state certification officer will point you at certified labs; many utilities hand out free kits. Two details decide whether the result means anything: collect a first-draw sample after the water has stood at least 6 hours — overnight is easiest — from the cold side, without running the tap first. A flushed sample describes the main in the street; a first-draw sample describes the plumbing you actually drink from. Some labs run both for $40–120.

On a private well, one thing changes: the Lead and Copper Rule doesn't cover you at all, so nobody is testing on your behalf. Lead in well water is rarely geological — it comes from brass pump components, fittings and old solder, and acidic water below pH 6.5 pulls it out faster. A positive result plus a low pH means the corrosion needs fixing alongside the filter.

What actually removes lead — and what it costs

One certification does the heavy lifting. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-effects reduction, and its lead protocol is deliberately brutal: 150 ppb of dissolved and particulate lead through the cartridge, no more than 5 ppb out, tested at pH 6.5 and 8.5 across the full rated life. NSF/ANSI 58 does the same for reverse osmosis. A cartridge carrying only NSF/ANSI 42 is certified for chlorine taste and odor and makes no lead claim at all — that gap is where most disappointment lives.

Until the line is out, two free habits shrink exposure. Run the cold tap 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has stood more than six hours — longer with a lead service line, since clearing the volume between street and faucet takes minutes. And never cook with or mix formula from the hot tap: hot water dissolves more lead, and a water heater is a tank of standing water. CDC and EPA give both as interim steps, and both are explicit that flushing doesn't replace filtration.

Why a whole-house filter doesn't fix a lead problem

This is the most expensive wrong turn in the category. A point-of-entry system sits where water enters the house — upstream of the solder joints, brass shutoffs, galvanized branch lines and faucet body where household lead actually gets picked up. Filter at the entry point and the water still runs through 60 feet of the real problem afterward. A $30 certified pitcher at the kitchen sink beats a $1,200 whole-house unit on lead: not a knock on the big unit, just the wrong location for this contaminant.

Two more near-misses. A water softener treats hardness, not lead — and softened water is slightly more corrosive to metal plumbing, since the thin scale layer hard water deposits also separates water from pipe wall. And a partial line replacement can spike lead temporarily: cutting into old pipe disturbs the scale inside it, so EPA and AWWA guidance is to flush thoroughly and keep filtering at the tap for three to six months afterward.

And one piece of history catches people out: the Safe Drinking Water Act banned lead pipe and solder in 1986, but "lead free" brass legally held up to 8% lead until January 4, 2014, when the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act cut it to a weighted average of 0.25%. A faucet bought in 2005 is post-ban and still a contributor; fixtures certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 meet the current limit.

Can you tell if water has lead by looking at it or tasting it?

No. Lead is colorless, odorless and tasteless in drinking water, and the EPA action level of 15 ppb is 0.015 mg/L — far below anything a person or a TDS meter can detect. A certified lab test on a first-draw sample, $20–100, is the only way to know.

Does boiling water remove lead?

No — it concentrates it. Lead doesn't evaporate, so boiling off part of the water leaves the same amount of lead in less volume. Boiling addresses bacteria, not metals; for lead you need a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or an RO system certified to NSF/ANSI 58.

Do pitcher filters actually remove lead?
