Six pallets in the hardware store aisle, every bag stamped "Water Softener Salt," prices from about $5.50 to $32 for the same 40 pounds. One says solar, one crystals, one pellets with rust remover, and the cheap one at the end just says rock. Nothing on the bags explains what changes inside your brine tank — and you're only here because last weekend you found gray sludge on the tank floor that wouldn't scoop out clean.

The core answer: Purity is the difference that matters. Evaporated pellets run 99.6–99.9% NaCl with under 0.1% insolubles at $8–13 per 40-lb bag — the right default for most units. Solar crystals sit near 99.5%; rock salt is 95–98%, so every bag drops 0.8–2 lbs of clay and grit into the tank as sludge. Block salt is 99%+ but only works in units designed for it. Potassium chloride is $25–40 a bag and needs 10–25% more per cycle. A four-person home burns 360–720 lbs a year: $75–230 on pellets, $230–650 on potassium.

Three checks that tell you which salt your setup needs

Before comparing bags, find out what your own tank, water and basement are asking for. Each of these takes under ten minutes.

1. The jar test on the salt you're using now. Drop a handful into a quart jar of warm water, stir a minute, let it stand 10–15 minutes. High-purity salt leaves the water nearly clear. Rock salt leaves a gray-brown layer on the bottom — the 2–5% insoluble fraction, mostly gypsum and dirt, doing in miniature what it does in your tank over a season.

2. An iron strip on the cold tap. Run cold water 30 seconds and dip an iron test strip; a 50-strip pack is $10–20. Above 0.3 mg/L — the EPA secondary standard for iron, where staining starts — salt blended with a citric-acid resin cleaner earns its extra $2–4 a bag. Below that, the additive has nothing to work on.

3. Humidity, and what the manual allows. A $10–15 hygrometer settles the first half: above roughly 60% relative humidity, crystals and potassium cake noticeably faster than pellets. The second half is the model plate — block salt only works in cabinet units engineered to hold water over the block. In a standard American brine tank the blocks sit dry above the waterline and dissolve almost nothing.

The five types, side by side

All of these are sodium chloride except the last, and all should carry NSF/ANSI 60 certification for drinking-water treatment chemicals. What separates them is how they were produced — that sets purity, and purity is what your tank feels.

Two labels on the same shelf aren't separate types: "rust remover" pellets add citric acid against iron fouling in the resin, "clean and protect" formulas add a scale inhibitor. Both start from the same 99.6%+ base — the extra $2–4 buys the additive, not better salt.

What a year actually costs

Consumption is set by hardness and water use, not by brand. A four-person household on 10 gpg water regenerates every 5–10 days at 6–15 lbs per cycle: 30–60 lbs a month, or nine to eighteen 40-lb bags a year.

Why the cheapest bag is rarely the cheapest year

Rock salt saves about $3–5 a bag, so $40–80 across a year. The insolubles don't leave with the brine: at 3% average in 500 lbs, that's 15 lbs of grit a year settling on the tank floor as mush, and the same particles work their way into the brine injector — a nozzle with an orifice measured in fractions of a millimeter. A partly blocked injector doesn't announce itself — it just draws less brine, the resin comes back half-regenerated, and hardness creeps from 0–1 gpg to 5–7 gpg over a few months. By then the savings are gone twice over.

The other reflex that backfires is switching to potassium chloride for health reasons without checking the arithmetic. Ion exchange adds about 7.5–8 mg/L of sodium per grain of hardness removed — about 115 mg/L on 15 gpg water, against the 20 mg/L the EPA's drinking water advisory flags for people on sodium-restricted diets. Worth knowing — though a slice of bread carries around 150 mg. If dietary sodium is the concern, a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen tap removes it for a one-time $200–500, while potassium chloride costs $150–450 extra every year and softens no better.

Which water softener salt is best for most homes?

Evaporated pellets, at 99.6–99.9% sodium chloride and under 0.1% insolubles. They run $8–13 per 40-lb bag — a few dollars more than crystals or rock — and keep the tank and injector clean, which is where the savings on cheaper salt usually go.

Can I mix salt types in the brine tank?

Mixing sodium chloride types is harmless, though it's cleaner to let the tank drop to about a quarter full first. Don't layer pellets over rock salt — the insolubles underneath stay there and cake. Switching between sodium and potassium chloride also needs a dose change at the valve.

Is potassium chloride worth the extra cost?

Only if sodium intake is a genuine constraint. It costs $25–40 a bag against $8–13 for pellets and needs 10–25% more per cycle: $230–650 a year instead of $75–230, for identical softening. For drinking water alone, an RO unit at the kitchen tap is cheaper long-term.

Does salt with rust remover replace an iron filter?

No. The citric-acid additive helps keep iron from fouling the resin at low levels, roughly 0.3–1 mg/L. Most softeners are rated to handle only about 1–3 mg/L of clear-water iron at all, and above that you need a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener.
