Is Softened Water Safe to Drink? The Sodium Question
The softener went in last spring and delivered: the shower door stopped hazing, the kettle lost its crust, glasses came out clear. Then somebody at a checkup mentions watching sodium, and the 40-lb bag of salt in the garage looks different. The installer said "a tiny amount." A forum said softened water is basically salt water. Neither ran the number for your house.

You need one input: hardness before the softener. A hardness strip on an outdoor bib — most sit upstream of the unit; $10–20 for 50 strips, ±1–2 gpg in 30 seconds. Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report, free online, with hardness and often source-water sodium. A certified lab panel for wells: sodium is a $20–50 add-on that also shows what was already there.
Then multiply. Sodium added (mg/L) = hardness in gpg × 7.85. If your report gives hardness as mg/L of calcium carbonate, divide by 17.1 first (171 mg/L = 10 gpg). The exchange is stoichiometric — the rate doesn't drift with brand, tank size or resin age.
A TDS meter won't answer it: one calcium ion (40 g/mol) leaves, two sodium ions (23 g/mol each) arrive, so TDS holds flat or ticks up a few percent while the water genuinely gets soft.

For scale: a slice of bread is about 150 mg of sodium, a cup of milk 100 mg, canned soup 600–900 mg per cup. The CDC puts average US intake near 3,300 mg a day against the 2,300 mg guideline, roughly 70% of it from packaged and restaurant food.
The right-hand column is where the question stops being generic. Under 10 gpg it's a rounding error against a normal diet; at 15–20 gpg, modest but real; past 25 gpg — common on Midwest and Southwest wells — you're adding 200+ mg/L. The EPA's 20 mg/L level for 500 mg/day restricted diets is passed at just 2.5 gpg, i.e. by any softened water at all. That's advisory guidance, not an enforceable limit — sodium has no MCL.

Why potassium chloride isn't the automatic upgrade
Same softener, same programming, swap the bag — three things get in the way.
It costs three to four times as much, permanently. A 40-lb bag of KCl runs $25–40 against $6–10 for pellet salt. A family at 15 gpg burns 8–12 bags a year: a $70–120 salt bill becomes $250–450, every year.
It's a worse regenerant. Potassium chloride strips hardness off the resin less efficiently, so manufacturers commonly recommend raising the dose ~10% to hold capacity. It also cakes faster in a humid brine tank — surfacing later as a salt bridge and a unit that quietly stops softening.
It doesn't make the water mineral-free — it changes which mineral. Every milligram of sodium avoided returns as roughly 1.7 mg of potassium. A non-issue for most people, but potassium is exactly what those with reduced kidney function are often told to watch — a question for a doctor, not a plumbing catalog. There the better answer adds nothing at all: an unsoftened tap or an RO membrane at the sink.
One more wrinkle: softened water is more corrosive to metal plumbing, since the thin scale layer hard water leaves also separates water from pipe wall. With pre-1986 lead solder that matters — it's the mechanism behind the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule and its 15 ppb action level, and a second argument for one unsoftened cold tap.
Common mistakes
- Judging sodium with a TDS meter. It reads solids, not composition; softening leaves TDS flat or a few percent higher. Sodium is a $20–50 lab line item.
- Assuming the softener is the only source. Coastal and arid-region wells arrive at 50–200 mg/L untreated, and road-salt runoff lifts shallow wells seasonally. Test raw water first.
- Softening every line, kitchen tap included. Drinking and cooking is a small share of household use — plumbing around it at $150–400 usually beats treating all of it.
- Switching to potassium chloride without asking a doctor. The swap trades ~1 mg of sodium for 1.7 mg of potassium — a question for anyone managing kidney function.

How much sodium does a water softener actually add?
About 7.85 mg/L per grain per gallon removed. At 10 gpg that's 79 mg/L — roughly 158 mg in two liters a day, under 7% of the FDA's 2,300 mg limit and comparable to a slice of bread. At 25 gpg the same two liters carry closer to 390 mg.
Is softened water safe for babies and infant formula?
Formula is mixed to a target sodium content, so several state health departments advise an unsoftened cold tap or RO water for it, especially above 15 gpg (118 mg/L added). A question for your pediatrician and local health department, not a universal rule.
Does softened water taste salty?
Usually not. The EPA's advisory puts the taste threshold near 30–60 mg/L, about 4–8 gpg of hardness removed. A distinctly salty taste generally points to a stuck regeneration cycle or a brine valve that isn't shutting, not normal operation.
Is there a legal limit for sodium in drinking water?
No. Sodium has no federal maximum contaminant level under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The EPA uses an advisory instead — 30–60 mg/L for taste, 20 mg/L as guidance for 500 mg/day restricted diets. Some states set their own notification levels.
