GE XWF vs XWFE vs RPWFE: Which Filter Your Fridge Takes
The old cartridge went into the trash before anyone read the label. Now there are three tabs open — XWF, XWFE, RPWFE — and all three are the same white cylinder in the same product photo. The dispenser light has been red for three weeks. One of these clicks in for $45 and clears it; the other two are a return shipment and another week of tap water.

Skip the model-year guesswork. Three checks, in order — the first one that answers wins.
1. Read the cartridge you're pulling out. The part number is printed on the body near the cap. It's the only fully reliable answer, so read it before the old filter hits the bin.
2. Look at the cartridge itself. These are distinguishable at a glance once you know the tells. A plain XWF is smooth plastic, no electronics anywhere. An XWFE has a small copper contact sensor on the body — that's the whole upgrade. An RPWFE is visibly longer, with different cap geometry and a flat RFID tag on the side.
3. Pull the model number off the fridge. The model-and-serial sticker sits inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on a side wall or under the crisper trim, and GE's parts lookup at geappliances.com matches it to the exact cartridge.
The generational map is a sanity check, not an answer: pre-2017 side-by-side and bottom-freezer units are usually MWF territory, 2017-onward French door units are XWF/XWFE, and Profile and Café units from roughly 2014 use RPWF or RPWFE. Where map and cartridge disagree, the cartridge is right.

Two things there matter. The newer part number isn't the better-certified one: RPWFE carries NSF/ANSI 401 for trace pharmaceuticals, the XWF family doesn't. NSF/ANSI 53 is the lead claim on all four — the protocol pushes 150 ppb through and allows no more than 5 ppb out, against the EPA action level of 15 ppb — and it's verifiable at nsf.org, not just on the box. No capacity rating overrides the 6-month interval: carbon degrades on a clock as well as a meter.

Why "just buy the newest one" backfires
Inside a family the instinct mostly holds. Across families it doesn't: XWFE and RPWFE are different lengths with different cap keying, so the wrong one won't seat — no leak, no damage, just a return label.
The compatibility that exists runs one way. GE lists XWFE as the successor to XWF, and the sheet in the box covers the contact sensor on older fridges — read it instead of improvising. The reverse fails: a unit built to read that sensor hunts for it, doesn't find it on a plain XWF, and holds the "replace filter" indicator on however new the cartridge is. It's the missing chip that trips it, not the model year. Same logic on the other line — RPWFE drops into an RPWF fridge, RPWF in an RPWFE fridge never completes the handshake.

- Throwing out the old cartridge before reading it. The part number on the body is the one answer that can't be wrong — photograph it before the filter hits the bin.
- Ordering by model year alone. The 2017 and 2020 dividing lines are rough, and trim variants within one line take different cartridges. Match the model-and-serial sticker inside the fresh-food compartment, not the year on the invoice.
- Buying a plain XWF to save a few dollars. In a fridge that reads the sensor it seats fine, then holds the filter indicator on permanently. The $5 saved becomes a $45 cartridge you can't use.
- Treating the change light as a measurement. It's a timer and a flow counter, not a water-quality sensor. Change at 6 months even if the light is quiet — the 170- and 300-gallon ratings are ceilings, not targets.
